40 Days

Wow, I guess when you are keeping track of the days a picture at the time, you start to realize how quickly the year passes. 40 days doesn’t seem like a lot at first, until you think that in 40 more days we will be at the 80 day mark, then it quickly shows you how fast the year will be just be another memory. I was so busy these last 20 days that I really didn’t have a chance to sit down and do my 21-30 day most so I figured I would just combine that most and the 31-40 day post into one larger post. So here are Days 21-40 of my Project 365 page. Remember if you want to follow along with my daily posts you can follow me on Instagram. I also have a page dedicated to my 365 Days Project.

I kicked off the last 20 days by celebrating my 31st birthday. I was happy to be in a much better place mentally than I was on my 30th birthday. I spent the day with people who are important to me. I was surrounded with love, texts, and phone calls. It was a wonderful day. I couldn’t think of any way I would have rather of spent my birthday.

The biggest news from the last 20 days has been the beginning of the certification program for Reflexology. I know I’ve mentioned it in a lot of my posts, and I probably will for a while, but hey, when you are passionate about something you tend to talk about it a lot.

I also saw my Rheumatologist, who I see every 3-4 months and it was a great appointment. I’m fairly stable right now, and while I require routine testing and follow ups with him.

Meatloaf, I love making meatloaf, and this one turned out exceptionally well. I like playing around the ingredients and the glazes I make for them and this one was delicious!

6/30

The Pineapple I started trying to root had strong roots showing when I checked it on this date.

Look at all those Figs!! I can not wait until they are ripe!

A day wandering around parks with my Doug! I even wore my sunscreen AND my floppy hat!

Stopped to watch the creek for a few before finishing our walk. I spent a lot of time at the edge of this creek right after my miscarriage. I still feel a strong connection to this area. I probably always will.

7/8

Doug and I applied an Owl graphic to our side door. What a Hoot!

7/9

I spent some time outside reading, listening to music and watching the birds on my feeders while drinking some tea out of my owl mug. Noticing a trend here? Yep I love owls!

7/10

I started a fresh batch of Kombucha brewing. For those of you who have known me since before I got ‘sick’ you know how big of a deal this is!!! When I it sick I had to stop consuming the booch while we sorted out my diagnoses and my medications. Last month I got the go ahead to add it back to my diet, slowly, once my flare passed!! I figure by the time this batch is ready I should be good to go! I’ve kept my scobies going over the last year by feeding them and switching out the tea from time to time. Now I can go back to actually making Kombucha to drink again!

So this duck approached our car when we got to the park. After walking around the entire car out feathered friend decided to sit down beside us for a while.

7/11

Friday evening out with the guys. Had a good dinner at Hawthorne’s Pizza and then walked across to Rocky River Coffee to enjoy evening beverages outside while the sun sets. Perfect!

7/12

Color Festival Charlotte 2014. It was a pretty awesome experience. Color everywhere!

7/15

Misha loves her tennis ball. She was just chillin’ on the back deck with it, and I got this rather smug shot of her. She looks like she’s smoking a cigar instead of holding a ball!

Dinner is served! One pot pasta, and fresh-baked herbed focaccia bread.

7/16

My sourdough starter is super happy. I reactivated some I had in the freezer yesterday and fed it again this morning. I’ll be moving it to a bigger jar when I feed it the next time!

Homemade sun-dried tomato, corn & caramelized onion quiche. Made the crust from scratch as well! YUM!

This little guy eating lettuce brought a smile to my face today while we were walking around Petco.

7/18

Out with friends on a Friday night. This is my friend Penny. Always happy when we get to see each other!

7/19

I made two loaves of sourdough and had enough starter left to keep it going for the next round of baking. Feels good to be getting back to my old hobbies and self.

6/22

Stepped outside briefly to take a picture of the beautiful sky. I learned quickly the previous week that summer and I probably aren’t going to get along. The time I had spent in the sun along with a few other contributing factors landed me in flare city. This day turned out to be a rather hot and humid carolina summer day. The skies are so beautiful though, I guess that’s one redeeming thing about summer. Still I’ll be much happier when Autumn gets here…that is after all my favorite time of the year!

Today I found moments of happiness in just being me. This flare took a lot out of me, it wasn’t like my previous flares which were largely just loads of joint pain and fatigue. This one left me feeling flu-like and highly frustrated. Plus Prednisone gave me bouts of ‘roid rage’. Still I found moments of still being about to laugh at myself. I still have issues taking the down time that some flares require me to, being able to laugh through it helps some though.

6/23

Rechecking my INR on Monday showed the Flare was subsiding and that my INR had rebounded! It was decided I needed a couple more days of the Prednisone so Dr. C called in more for me to get me through plus enough so I’d have them on hand for the next flare (or 2). I was able to come off of them Tuesday. I scheduled my next INR for Friday since I was still taking Prednisone. Just seeing my INR back in range took a lot of stress off of me. It makes me really nervous when my INR dips so this was really great news!

We celebrated by going to see How To Train Your Dragon 2! Such a cute movie, with such a great story line. I cried. Yep no shame here.

6/24

Therapy day I took a few moments to reflect in the parking lot before going inside. They have big trees in their front yard. I find it nice that the place I go to therapy has trees, it makes it a comfortable place. This was a pretty intense session and we covered a lot. This was the first session I’ve had mid-flare so it was nice to be able to touch base with AL during a flare so she could see where my mind goes when I’m ‘sicker’. Granted this go round, it appears the emotional fall-out is happening a few days later than it usually happens, that’s okay, I’ve been writing the thoughts down in my notebook like I’m suppose to, and we will go over them at my next appointment.

6/25

Zazzle, snoozing and snoring softly. I know I post lots of pictures of my cat, but she’s rather important to me. So are our other pets. I should post more pictures of them! Zazzle just happens to sit still longer than they do and allows me to take more pictures of her than they do. haha!

One of the simple pleasure I have in life is cooking dinner for my loved ones. I can get lost in trying to create a meal! It’s a way I can escape for a bit and clear my mind. Pictured here is Balsamic Honey Glazed Chicken,  German Potato Salad, and Herb Rubbed Seared Corn On The Cob. It was a delicious meal! Definitely one I will repeat in the future.

6/26

Apparently M&M’s decided they needed to make a larger version? Uhm, no. They are just weird. They even taste weird. Dislike.

On the way home we saw a rainbow hanging out. No storms, or rain. Just a random rainbow.

6/27

Transformers Age of Extinction!! We made it out of my INR check in time to make it to the 10AM showing. Pretty exciting. Yes it was awesome, yes I want to go see it again. BUMBLEBEE!!!!!! Oh and Optimus Prime too! 🙂

After we made it home after the movie zazzle snuggled up to me on the couch on my skirt and wouldn’t let me up. I eventually had to talk her into letting me up because it was time for my evening meds, plus it was almost time for us to head out for the evening. She’s so snuggly lately. She’s actually sitting beside me as I type this right now as close to me as she can get without actually being in my lap. Yep.

6/28

Our Rose of Sharon bush is blooming right now and is covered in blooms and buds. I can’t decide if I like the open blooms more or these blooms that are getting ready to open. Both are beautiful in their own way.

Here are my two guys, my husband Mellow, and bestie Doug working on a project around the house. It doesn’t matter what we are doing I always enjoy spending the day with these two guys. I’m very thankful to have them, and for their love and support. It’s been rough this past year and I’m really not sure how I would have made it through it without them. They made it through the scariest days with me and I am so thankful for that. Love them to pieces.

Afternoon Coffee with my husband at one of the local coffee shops. It was a beautiful afternoon so we sat outside and enjoyed a cool breeze. It made for a nice litte date.

Balloon Flower starting to bud. This is one of my favorite little flowers and I get excited every year when it comes back. I wish I could find more to add to it but so far I only have the one.

6/2

Maleficent! Doug and I went and saw this movie. It was pretty good and an interesting take on the classic tale of Sleeping Beauty. It was of special interest of my because I am a huge fan of Brian Froud and it was amazing to see they had fashioned their fairies, elves, and other creatures after his artwork. It was awesome to see them animated.

New Glass Water Bottle. I had been wanting a new water bottle for a while, and decided a glass one was in order. This one is perfect. I drink a lot of water because of all the medications I am on. If I don’t my blood pressure starts dipping too low, which leads to dizziness and other issues so I have to make sure I stay hydrated at all times. 5 of these guys a day and I’m pretty good. If that sounds like a lot of water.. it’s around 100 ounces. Sometime I drink a little less than that, some days more. I let my body guide me.

Time spent outside listening to music and writing freelance articles. I have always prefered being outdoors than being indoors. When I am experiencing writers block or issues focusing on writing assignments I have found moving outdoors helps me a lot. I took my laptop, headphones, and spent the afternoon outside. I managed to knock my article out and get it ready for proofreading and submitted it later that evening well before deadline. Success!

My best pet company Zazzle. This cat, she’s something else. She has become such a lap cat. She also likes to play tag, if I can ever get a picture of that, I’ll post it, but she will hide around a corner until she hears you coming and then run out on her hind legs and tag you with her front paws. It is hilarious.

Timber spending time on the deck. He has just recently started doing this. Before now he wouldn’t stay outside for long periods of time by himself. He’d go out barely long enough to do his business then he’d run back in as quick as he could. It was rather nice seeing him spend some time outside by himself.

Started reading Feeling Good. This book was recommended to me by my Therapist. It is part of my Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It is supposed to be one of the best books out there on CBT and she is confident that this will aid me in dealing with the emotional struggles I am having when it comes to coping with my illnesses. I’ve read through the introduction and the first chapter and it has my attention. Prior to this book I did not consider myself as depressed but after reading this I can see that some of the cognitions and emotional struggles that I am dealing with are depression. In fact According to the rating system in the book I am moderately depressed. Good thing there wasn’t an anxiety rating system as well, because I would be off the charts on that one! The book says most people who partake in CBT see improvements with their moods within 12 weeks. So that is September(ish)? I can totally do this!

6/5

Rainbow Prism Jenica Gave me. Jenica is a dear friend of mine that has been an amazing support of mine through all of this. She came down for a visit a little while ago and gave me this rainbow prism to hang in my blazer. It casts little rainbows all around my blazer, plus just looks pretty hanging from my mirror. I smile every time I look at it.

Excerpt from Feeling good. This chart shows some positive feedback from CBT therapy. In that study group it was more effective than those treated with antidepressants. I’m on an antidepressant, going to therapy and will be utilizing CBT so I am hopeful that this will make for a positive experience with this method. It is a goal of mine to get off of the antidepressant that I am on or at least start working toward that goal by decreasing my dose by the end of the year. I plan on bringing this up to my PCP in the near future to get his feedback on this thought.

6/6

New scarf to add to my growing collection. I’m slightly addicted to scarves. I have an ever-growing collection and I ran across this beauty this week. It came home with me. It was on sale for $8 and then when I got to the register it rang up for just over $6 due to another discount and rewards points. Even better!

6/7

Blurry Picture but it’s of my scarf on. With the teals and purples in this scarf it goes well with a lot of my wardrobe. I wore it to dinner last night with a teal dress, and today I wore it with a purple tank top and jeans. Perfect with both outfits.

Today I got a massage. It helped a lot with the hip pain I’ve been experiencing this week. I also haven’t felt this relaxed in months. I owe it all to my wonderful massage therapist and best friend Doug!

I started 100 Days of Happiness on June 1st and am documenting my posts through Instagram and also adding the pictures to my 100 Days page. The 100 Days page has a little lag to it as I can’t always update it everyday.

I found sunscreen that works finally. Not only does it work great, it smells wonderful, and feel great. It doesn’t leave my skin feeling yucky after multiple applications and is long-lasting. I can go a full two hours between applications and the Helioplex formula does wonders for the sunblock. My doctors recommended I go up to SPF 70 and find one with Helioplex this is what I found. Wonderful!

Sunday was a wonderful day to spend some time outside sitting in the shade of the trees in our front yard. It was a great way to relax and unwind after a busy day.

I spent the evening catching up on freelance writing article. It might not be enough to call it a career, but it is allowing me to make some extra cash as a writer. That is a big deal to me and hopefully as time goes by it will become more fruitful. I have always wanted to be a professional writer, and hopefully someday I will be a published writer as well.

I spent the afternoon at one of my favorite coffee shops working on blog posts, writing and catching up on emails. It was a great afternoon. Eventually I had to move inside though because it came a pretty bad storm. I met a couple of great ladies while I was outside though and chatted with them about my blog. As they left they offered me their table that was in a shadier location. The one lady had a great-niece who had Lupus, and she said to me ‘I know you shouldn’t be sitting in the sun like that dear, so why don’t you move over here now.’ It was so sweet.

Sunday evening pause courtesy of Zazzle. Sometimes she decides I need to take a rest even when I don’t really want to. Misha loves to lay on the deck and just watch over the yard. She’s our big ‘guard dog’ She will bark to let us know when someone is walking down the road past the house. She won’t actually get up out of her place, just wants to make noise to let us know. It’s not even a lot, just a little bark to say ‘hey people, there’s a person walking by, you should know this.’

Sometimes when I’m upset, or just need to give some deep thought so something, I go sit under the trees. I’ve done this since I was a kid, which was easy since I grew up in the mountains/country. Now that I live in the city, I am really luck we happen to live in an older neighborhood that actually still has larger older trees in the yards. Our yard is one of the more wooded lots in the neighborhood. The only downside to that is, that most of the trees are Sweet gum Trees.

We went and watched planes at the Airport Overlook. Because of the wind direction planes were taking of opposite of the way they normally are taking off so they were in the air by the time they were in front of us.

Max got his cage cleaned and a bath. He isn’t really a fan of bath time, but hedgehogs require baths. We also started the process of clipping his toenails. This usually takes a few ‘sessions’ because he isn’t a fan of that either and curls into a tight ball.

Dr. C wore purple for Lupus Awareness. Yep he’s a pretty awesome doctor! I consider myself darn lucky to have him as my PCP.

INR check 2.9, stress induced flare. Fun times. Left the dose the same Recheck in 10 days.

INR 2.9. Range 3-3.5. Close. Pretty sure it's a little low due to the stress induced flare this week. Recheck in 10days. I'm liking the built in flexibility that Dr. C is giving me with the 1-2 week window of when I should come in to get it checked. I'm not comfortable with pushing it a full two weeks yet so I'm splitting the difference and averaging 10 days. I have an appointment with my hematologist in June so I will get his thoughts on the spacing of my INR checks and then we will go from there. Though honestly weekly checks do mean a better controlled anticoagulant and I like the sound of that. Rumor has it they are doing away with these little sheets and switching to a different method for inr appointments. Will be interesting and from the sounds of it frustrating for everyone involved. None of the doctors or nurses seem thrilled with the change and neither am I so far. #antiphospholipidsyndrome #aps #hughessyndrome #lupus #lupie #warfarin #anticoagulant

Moments In Time From Last Week

I want to share images I have captured over the last week and posted to my Instagram that highlight moments in my life. There is also a snazzy widget on my sidebar of my instagram if you are viewing my blog from the actual site. That gets lost if you are viewing it in reader, so from time to time I thought it would be fun to do a post and share a few images that I thought were worth pointing out from my week. I will try to do this each Sunday. I hope you enjoy!

5/11

My Great-Great Grandpa helped build this bridge. The bridge was built in 1922 as part of the State Work Project.  We went back to my hometown to visit family for Mother’s Day.

This is the dirt road I grew up on. I spent my childhood walking this road, and riding my bike up and down it. We lived down at one end of it and my Great-Grandparents lived at the beginning of it. I would walk up the road every morning to catch the bus. Every afternoon I would get off at their house, my Great Grandpa would have an afternoon snack wrapped in a paper towel for me. It was always a Nutty Buddy Bar and an Oatmeal Pie. This picture was taken halfway up the road facing the main road as we left coming home that afternoon.

It was pets sit weird day at our house that day. First here’s Misha sitting on the couch:

Then just a few minutes later I walked into the kitchen and found Zazzle sitting on the safety gate we use to keep the dogs out of the back of the house:
